Project 2012 – Project description
The Michel Garant’s Challenge – from sea to sea for Mira, a nation-wide project! After participating in several fundraising events and having toured the Gaspé twice to raise money for Mira, Michel Garant, along with his faithful companion Mollo, has taken on a new challenge.
On June 9, 2012, Michel and Mollo will begin a cross-Canada trip by handbike from Vancouver, BC to Sydney, Nova Scotia. His schedule covers for a trip of over 7,300 kilometres in less than 90 days to meet a personal challenge and raise $150,000 for the Mira Foundation. At the end of his trip he will become the first paraplegic athlete to travel across Canada by handbike in support of a charitable cause. To see his entire route, please go to the map in the section titled « Itinerary » below.
Since Mollo joined the Garant family, Michel has had nothing but praise for the Mira Foundation. Mira is a not-for-profit organization that supplies, at no cost, highly intelligent dogs that have been specifically trained to assist persons who are disabled or suffer from such major disabilities as blindness, severe physical handicaps or pervasive developmental conditions, such as autism. For more information on the Foundation, click on Mira from this site or go to Mira’s official Web site, which can be found at www.mira.ca.
For The Michel Garant’s Challenge – from sea to sea for Mira, the Foundation has joined forces with prestigious partners, such as Astral, Eukanuba, Publicis and other sponsors to cover most of the costs of the trip.
Anyone who is receptive to this cause that is so near and dear to Michel’s heart can make an on-line donation using this site. MasterCard, Visa and American Express credit cards are accepted. Cheque donations should be made out to Mira Foundation inc. and sent to its head office, located at 1820, rang Nord-Ouest, Sainte-Madeleine, Québec J0H 1S0 with the notation « Michel Garant’s Challenge for Mira ». The Foundation will issue income tax receipts for donations of $20 or more upon request.
Michel is working closely with a marketing team set up by his sister-in-law and friend Fabienne Breton, to build this great Web site. Also, thanks to this enthusiastic team, Michel will be able to proudly wear his new jersey and use the new accessories that help him as he travels.
Heading out on an epic journey such as this, could result in uncertainties for Michel. Slight delays, fatigue caused by the time changes, unpredictable or nasty weather, are all factors that could affect him, but are to be expected. On the other hand, road conditions and mechanical difficulties are harder to predict. And what about those little four-legged denizens that inhabit the Prairies? Will these be a temptation for Mollo? Will they tease him? So, Mollo, you need to stay focused! But as for Michel, we know it will take a lot more than that to deter him. At any rate, Michel is all set and ready to go, both physically and psychologically. It is in his character to approach his disability with determination and to hold on tight, so challenges are not something new to him.
